LOVE IS REAL!

We’ll say this. It wasn’t love at first sight.

Neither of them remember the specifics of their first meeting, but they’re fairly certain it happened way back in 2007 when Carolyn was a freshman and Max a junior at NYU’s Playwrights Horizons Theater School. Maybe it happened at the 3rd floor vending machines. Maybe in the Studio Theater lobby, waiting to see a student production of Mountain Language by Harold Pinter. Either way, that first encounter didn’t leave enough of an impression on either of them to recall today.

Still, at some point, the two became friends, though they never seemed to harbor romantic feelings toward one another. (Except Max is sure that when Carolyn tried to recruit him to a writers group via Facebook Message in 2015, it was because she was finally ready to make her move. Carolyn denies this vehemently. And reminds Max that he tried to recruit her for a show in Philadelphia in 2010…)

Years later, Carolyn – single and ready to mingle – is swiping around on a dating app when she happened upon a familiar face. “Hey, I know that guy,” she said to a friend. After some cajoling, the friend convinced her to send a message. Strictly platonically, Carolyn notes.

“Heyyyyy Max!” she wrote. Max picked up on the flirtation right away. The two went back and forth, catching up, and eventually Max asked the second-most important question of his life. “Considering this is a dating app… do you maybe wanna go on a daAaAaaAAAaaaAAte???” He backpedaled almost immediately, throwing in an option for a platonic hang instead, but Carolyn thought: “Wait a second. This is exactly the kind of guy I should be dating.” She said yes, the second-most important yes of her life.

It may not have been love at first sight, but fifteen years after that first forgotten encounter, it certainly feels like love at long last.

Travel and Accommodations

Hotel Blocks

Cape May is absolutely dripping with beachfront hotels, cute bed & breakfasts, and even condo, apartment, or Airbnb-style accommodations. While we have limited wedding blocks, we also recommend you scoping out other offerings based on your budget and needs.

Our main recommendations are that you’re within walking distance to the outdoor Washington Street Mall and the beach.

Getting There

There are a number of ways to get to Cape May from wherever you’re coming from!

Around Cape May

Cape May is incredible, which is why Carolyn’s family has been visiting yearly since before she was born, and Max’s extended family owns property there. But don’t take our word for it! Conde Nast Traveler has recently named Cape May as one of the 27 Most Beautiful Towns in America. Find some of our fave spots listed here:

DO

You’re in luck– these beautiful beaches (ranked second in the nation by Trip Advisor) are free until Memorial Day!

Bike or drive west to see the Cape May Lighthouse up close and personal, or look for “Cape May diamonds” on Sunset Beach.

We had an awesome time on this recumbent bike tour over the discontinued railroad tracks through the island.

This is the main drag for quaint shopping and deliciousness. Need a tchotchke for your home? The Whale’s Tale is a go-to for us for gifts and knick-knacks.

While there are also horse and buggy tours of the town, we recommend a ride in the big red-and-green trolleys. Tours range from architecture to history to ghosts, but whichever you choose it’s a great way to see the island.

EAT

Gourmet hot dogs from a man with a hot dog hat! Located just off the beach on adorable Jackson Street! Max always opts for a Messy Bessy (BBQ sauce and shredded cheddar cheese – but he also gets crushed potato chips added)!

Also on Jackson Street– this is easily the best brunch in town. Try our fave – the french toast with sliced orange and almonds.

A fun gas-station-turned-eatery which focuses on Southeast Asian flavors.

Ice cream sandwiches but with fancy pie-like flavors inside! A million options for whatever your tastes.

Located on the Washington Street Mall, these standard soft serves never get old. Go for the swirl.

FAQs

  • There will be a shuttle picking up guests at the Montreal Beach Resort (1025 Beach Ave) at 4:30pm.
  • Shuttles will be picking up guests at Congress Hall at 4:45pm and 5:10pm.
  • If you are not staying at one of the aforementioned hotels, know that Congress Hall is centrally located near the Washington Street Mall. That should be the most convenient shuttle location for the majority of guests!
  • The shuttle will make planned departures at the end of the night at 9:30pm, 10:15pm, and 11:00pm. These will stop at Congress Hall, but can also stop at 233 4th Avenue and Montreal Beach Resort, if requested. The third shuttle will also stop at Carney’s for the after party.
  • Cape May is not a reliable Uber/Lyft town, so please get to those shuttles on time if you’re planning on using them!
  • If you choose to drive, no problem, there are also plenty of parking spots available at the winery near the reception area. Just know that it is about a 5-10 minute walk from the parking lot to the ceremony site.

Cape May is a very walkable town! From the NJ Transit bus stop to the B&Bs to the eateries to the beach, you can pretty much do it all on foot. Renting a bike is fun, too. Parking spots can be paid for via app (ParkMobile).

The ceremony will be held outside on the Estate Lawn of the winery. If the forecast predicts rain, there will be a tent to protect you! The cocktail hour is planned to be mostly outside. The reception is in a spacious, high-ceilinged indoor venue.

The wedding dress code is cocktail attire. For the welcome drinks and the breakfast after, dressy casual or casual is fine. You might even want to slip some beachwear under that dress or polo shirt…

All guests are required to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 in accordance with the CDC’s guidelines before attending any of our wedding festivities. It would be greatly appreciated if you also got a negative Covid test prior to the big day– please ask Carolyn or Max if you need a test when you arrive in Cape May, and we will happily help you out! At this time, we are not asking guests to mask up during any portion of the weekend (unless they choose to do so).

If you are interested in obtaining babysitting services so you can party late, you can contact Guardian Angels Sitting Service.
